Can I delete access_log and error_log files from my UPipe account?

You can delete any log file with "processed" as part of its name in the Log Manager portion of the control panel. You cannot delete the access_log or error_log files.

However, you can reduce the amount of disk space being used in your log files by turning on log rotation in your control panel. Log file rotation allows you to place older log file data in separate files and will eventually delete the log file information when it becomes old enough or large enough. You can also compress log files while rotating them to save disk space.

To set up log file rotation for Plesk 5 hosting accounts (Upipe, MDH):

  1. Log into your Plesk 5 control panel with your user name and password.
  2. Click on the domain name for which you wish to set log file rotation.
  3. Click on the Log Manager button.
  4. Click on the Log Rotation button.
  5. If there is a red X to the left of Log rotation status click on the On/Off button.
  6. Select the log rotation period to be By Size or By Time.
  7. If you selected By Size set the size in KB (remembering 1024 KB = 1 MB). If you selected by time choose the time period from the drop down menu.
  8. Enter the number of additional log files to keep.
  9. Check the box next to Compress Log Files to save disk space.
  10. If you wish the log files to be sent to an email address, enter the email address in the box next to Send mail to:.
  11. Click on the Update button to save your changes.

To set up log file rotation for Plesk 7.54 hosting accounts (OHP, WebPro):

  1. Log into your control panel with your user name and password.
  2. Click on the domain name for which you wish to set log file rotation.
  3. Click on the Log Manager button.
  4. Click on the Log Rotation button
  5. If in the Tools section the switch is set to "Enable" then click on that switch to enable log rotation. The switch will then read "Disable".
  6. Select the log rotation period to be By Size or By Time.
  7. If you selected By Size set the size in KB (remembering 1024 KB = 1 MB). If you selected by time choose the time period from the drop down menu.
  8. Enter the maximum number of log files to keep.
  9. Check the box next to Compress Log Files to save disk space.
  10. If you wish the log files to be sent to an email address, enter the email address in the box next to "Send proccessed log files to e-mail".
  11. Click on the OK button to save your changes.

Manually deleting the processed log files will not negatively impact Plesk. These files are a byproduct of creating webstats and removing them will not remove any web stats for your site.

To remove the processed log files place a check in the box next to the processed log file you wish to delete, then click on the Remove Selected button. You will be unable to put a check box next to the log files Plesk needs to keep, the access_log and the error_log.

When you set the number of log files you wish to rotate new files will be created each time you rotate files. For example, if you set your log rotation to "daily" and choose to keep two log files you will create an access_log.1 file from the access_log file on the first day. The second day the access_log.1 will become access_log.2 and a new access_log.1 will be created. On the third day the access_log.2 file will be deleted, the access_log.1 will become access_log.2 and a new access_log.1 will be created.
