What is the difference between a shared IP address and a dedicated IP address?

A dedicated IP address will allow you to access your site by the IP address as well as by the domain name. A dedicated IP address is required for setting up a SSL certificate, and for anonymous FTP. If you do not need either of these features, a shared IP address is most likely just as good for your site as a dedicated IP address.
